Structural Glass Dome & Atrium — Alexandra Palace

Project Overview

Alexandra Palace, a Grade II listed venue in North London, required specialist structural glazing works to its glass dome and atrium roof. As a heritage building, the project demanded materials and fixing details that met current performance standards while respecting the character of the original ironwork and glazed structure.

The Work

Working at height inside a live heritage venue, our structural glazing team carried out the works in coordination with the building's conservation requirements:

• Surveyed the existing dome and atrium structure to confirm glazing bar tolerances and fixing points
• Removed aging and damaged glazing panels from the dome and atrium roof sections
• Installed new toughened and laminated structural glass units to current safety glazing standards
• Fitted heritage-appropriate glazing beads and seals to match the building's existing aesthetic
• Applied specialist sealants suited to the movement and detailing of the historic ironwork frame
• Carried out weather testing across the dome and atrium to confirm the glazing was fully watertight

Results

The completed works preserved the character of this landmark building while significantly improving its performance:

• A fully re-glazed dome and atrium meeting current safety glazing standards
• Weatherproofing restored to a structure that had suffered years of water ingress
• Heritage detailing retained throughout, in keeping with the building's listed status
• Works sequenced and access-managed to allow the venue to continue operating
